Looking at the Niou-mon ( the Deva kings' gate ) through the Chokushi-mon ( the messenger's gate ) of the Youtakuji temple.
The Niou-mon has two statues of the Niou ( the Deva kings ) at both sides. The Deva kings are the guardians for the Buddhist temples like the Koma-inu the guardians for Shintou Shrines.
The Chokushi-mon is the gate for the messenger sent from the emperor.
We are not allow to go into the temple through that gate. If a temple or a shrine has the messenger's gate it means that that temple/shrine is put at a high rank.
